A beginner-friendly children's knitting course ~ guided step-by-step from cast-on to cast-off. You'll knit a beautiful seamless vest for your little one, sized from 6 months all the way to 11 years. The perfect cosy layering piece for the cooler months ~ made by your hands, worn by them.

This is the course only option ~ perfect if you already have your own needles and tools, or if you'd like to source your own yarn. Everything else you need is included digitally.

What you'll need

You'll need to source these yourself ~ or grab the Course + Kit if you'd like us to take care of the tools for you:

  • 6mm - 80cm circular needles ~ for ribbing (hem, armholes, neckline)
  • 8mm - 80cm circular needles ~ for the body
  • 14 ply / Bulky weight yarn ~ see size table below for quantities
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch markers

You'll also want scissors, a measuring tape, and a small amount of scrap yarn ~ things most of us already have at home.

Sizes & yarn quantities

Choose your size by your child's chest measurement. The vest is designed with a comfortable amount of ease ~ go up a size if you prefer a more relaxed fit or want a little growing room.

Yarn quantities are based on 14 ply / Bulky weight yarn. These are a guide ~ allow an extra 20–30g if you prefer a longer vest or want a little extra to be sure. If you're using two colours (one for the body, one for the ribbing), we'll share guidance on how to split your quantities inside the course.

Yarn

This vest uses 14 ply / Bulky weight yarn ~ which is what makes it knit up so beautifully fast. You can use one colour for the whole vest, or a contrast colour for the ribbing (hem, armholes, neckline) for a gorgeous two-tone look.

We share our specific yarn recommendations inside the course ~ including a softer baby alpaca option if your little one is sensory-sensitive.

Once you've finished your Embrace Vest, you'll have every skill you need to cast on again ~ for a sibling, a friend's baby, or a new colourway. The same pattern grows with your child across 7 sizes, so you can knit it again and again as they do.

FAQs

Do I need any experience?+
The Embrace Vest is designed to be beginner-friendly ~ we start from the very beginning and guide you through every stitch. If you've never picked up needles before at all, we recommend starting with the Bloom Crop first ~ it will give you a beautiful foundation. But if you're keen to jump straight in, you absolutely can.
What's the difference between Course Only and Course + Kit?+
The course content is identical ~ same video lessons, same pattern, same community access. The Course + Kit adds a curated set of the tools you'll need (needles, tapestry needle, stitch markers) so you can get started straight away without any guesswork. If you already have your own tools, the Course Only is all you need.
What yarn should I use?+
You'll need a 14 ply / Bulky weight yarn. We share our specific recommendations inside the course, including a softer baby alpaca option for sensory-sensitive children. Check the size table above for how much you'll need per size.
Can I use two colours?+
Yes ~ and it looks gorgeous. You can knit the entire vest in one colour, or use a contrast for the ribbing (hem, armholes, and neckline). Both options are fully guided in the course. We'll share quantity guidance for two-colour versions inside.
What sizes does the pattern include?+
The Embrace Vest pattern includes 7 sizes ~ 6–12 months, 1–2 years, 2–3 years, 4–5 years, 6–7 years, 8–9 years, and 10–11 years. Every size is guided through in full throughout the course.
How long will it take to knit?+
The bulky yarn means this knits up quickly ~ many of our knitters finish a smaller size in a week or two, knitting in the pockets of everyday life. The larger sizes take a little longer, but the pace is really satisfying. And because the course is self-paced with lifetime access, there's no pressure ~ knit it in a weekend or across a whole season.
How will I know when doors open again?+

What if I get stuck?+
